Camping is more than just a recreational
experience for the YMCA of Greater Boston. The fun, friendships and excitement
of each summer are immediately evident to all campers and staff members. Our
programs encourage everyone to go beyond just becoming involved in the daily
activities by providing opportunities to mature while appreciating the value of
good sportsmanship, building self-esteem and learning from individual
differences.
The cabin group is the center of camp life.
Cabins are assigned by age and grade so that campers will learn and make new
friends among their peers. Campers and staff live in comfortable accommodations,
varying in size, that are rustic and reflect the spirit of camping with full
facility bathhouses located nearby.
Each session our camping family includes 140
campers and a mature and caring staff that are committed to the health and
safety of all. Our low supervision ratios enable our well
trained staff to carefully guide activities to facilitate social awareness and
teach life-long skills. While welcoming all religious backgrounds and beliefs,
the program embraces the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty,
Respect and Responsibility.
North Woods and Pleasant Valley Camps celebrate
their own unique traditions and history. The camps have separate housing, dining
halls, waterfronts and counseling staffs. However, their close proximity allows
for special combined activities during the season. Evening activities allow
campers to become involved in a host of programs including campfires, talent
shows, age group games and theme nights.

Our staff is carefully selected on the basis of
their experience, education, training, leadership ability and interpersonal
skills. Each staff member participates in a week long pre-camp training period
in preparation for the arrival of campers.
Cabin counselors are 18 years of age
or older, and are supported by CIT’s and assistant counselors who are 16 and
17. Many of our staff members have grown up at North Woods and Pleasant Valley.
International staff add a unique flavor and experience for everyone at camp.
While recollections of camp activities and the
surroundings never fade, what every child will remember most is the people.
Memories of the cabin mate who became a lasting friend or the counselor who took
the time to care, talk through a problem or share a laugh will continue for a
lifetime.
